National School Lunch Program Information

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) is a federally assisted meal program operating in public and nonprofit private schools and residential child care institutions. It provides nutritionally balanced, low-cost or free lunches to children each school day. The program was established under the National School Lunch Act, signed by President Harry Truman in 1946.

Free, reduced and full paid meals are served using an automated accounting system that protects the privacy of all students.

Participation may also qualify your household for discounts on after school care, some utilities, and AP and SAT/PSAT testing.

Applications are valid for one school year and carry over for the first 30 operating days of the next. Applications must be submitted every year if you wish for your student to remain on the program. Eligibility is determined by household income or participation in other programs such as CalWORKS, CalFRESH or Medi-CAL. Applications can be filled out online or paper applications may be obtained from your student's school office and may take up to 10 business days to process. Notification of eligibility is sent via US mail.

****Application for the federal National School Lunch Program for Free or Reduced Price Lunches is not required to qualify for the California Universal Meal Program. If you do not wish to disclose income information or elect not to fill out an application for any reason, your child may still eat free breakfast and lunch in the cafeteria daily.****

To file a program discrimination complaint, a Complainant should complete a Form AD-3027, USDA Program Discrimination Complaint Form which can be obtained online at: https://www.usda.gov/sites/default/files/documents/USDA-OASCR%20P-Complaint-Form-0508-0002-508-11-28-17Fax2Mail.pdf, from any USDA office, by calling (866) 632-9992, or by writing a letter addressed to USDA. The letter must contain the complainant’s name, address, telephone number, and a written description of the alleged discriminatory action in sufficient detail to inform the Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights (ASCR) about the nature and date of an alleged civil rights violation. The completed AD-3027 form or letter must be submitted to USDA by:
