Course Level Descriptions

High School Course Levels
Level	Description
Standard	A standard course meets most essential grade-level standards. However, the course has not been approved by the University of California and/or the California State University as meeting the rigor-level need to enter their universities.
College Prep (CP)	A college preparatory course meets grade-level standards. The course was approved by the University of California and the California State University as meeting the rigor-level needed to enter their universities.
Honors (H)	A college preparatory exceeds grade-level standards. Typically, an honors course is approved when there is a lower level college prep course and no higher level course is available. Although SVUSD weights Honors courses with a 5-point "A," students should check their school's a-g list to see if it is recognized as a weighted course. Note: 9th and 10th grade Honors courses are not weighted for UC/CSU.
Advanced Placement (AP)	An Advanced Placement course has been approved by the College Board. The course's curriculum is written by the College Board and meets the rigor of an actual college course. The course is designed to prepare students to take the corresponding AP Exam. All AP courses have weighted grades.
International Baccalaureate (IB)	Royal High School Only - An International Baccalaureate course has been approved by The International Baccalaureate. The course's curriculum is written by the organization and meets the rigor of an actual college course. The course is designed to prepare students to take the corresponding IB Exam. All IB courses have weighted grades.

Dual Enrollment (College and High School Credit)

The Simi Valley Unified School District believes that students participating in a rigorous curriculum benefit their long term academic outcomes. Additionally, the state of California encourages high school students to engage in college-level work and reports the extent to which they do so through the college and career indicator component of the California dashboard. All college courses must be pre-approved by the school principal or designee (5 CCR 1630; Education Code §48800). Therefore,

The course subject is included in the high school course of study. (5 CCR 1630) upon request, the student will provide a course outline.
A student may earn a maximum of 40 dual enrollment college credits (the equivalent of 12 semester credits on the college transcript) on his/ her high school transcript while enrolled in one of our comprehensive high schools. All college courses must be pre-approved by the school principal or designee (5 CCR 1630; Education Code §48800).
A 3-credit semester college course will earn 10 high school/ dual enrollment credits.
Any college courses offered on one of Simi Valley Unified high school campuses through a dual enrollment agreement shall be treated as any other on-campus course; the grade will receive a weighted grade point and count toward the minimum number of classes on campus.
Note: students may enroll in college-level courses beyond the 40 credit maximum placed on the high school transcript for non-high school credit enrichment purposes. Students may be able to submit community college transcripts independently when they apply to a university.
