Kindergarten Programs

Kindergarten Kids

Studies have shown that all children benefit from high quality, full-day Kindergarten. The Simi Valley Unified School District offers families throughout the district three, full-day kindergarten options, depending on the age and developmental needs of your child.

Junior, Transitional and Traditional Kindergarten classes are taught by credentialed teachers with experience in early-childhood education, in a safe and nurturing environment, on elementary campuses located throughout the district. All of our programs are free.

Enrollment is Open for Mid-Year Transitional Kindergarten

SVUSD is offering a special class for children born between 12/3/2014 and 1/7/15

To enroll in the 2019-2020 Mid-Year Transitional Kindergarten program, bring a completed enrollment form to the SVUSD District Office located at 101 West Cochran Street, along with your child’s original birth certificate, current immunization record and proof of Simi Valley residency (a current utility bill). Children who complete the Mid-Year TK program, will progress to Kindergarten for the 2020-2021 school year.

The first day of school for the Mid-Year TK class begins January 7, 2020

When do we enroll in Kindergarten?

Kindergarten (K) for the 2019-2020 school year is open to all children born on or before September 1, 2014. If you are attending your neighborhood school (SVUSD neighborhood school boundary maps are HERE), enrollment packets will be available beginning March 1, 2019 at your neighborhood school. If you are considering enrolling your child in a school that is not your neighborhood school, you will be participating in our School of Choice program. School of Choice allows families to place children in schools outside of their neighborhood boundaries as long as the target school has room for additional students. More information about School of Choice is found HERE. Please be mindful that School of Choice has an application deadline of February 28, 2019. Any applications received after the deadline will be placed on a wait list with the individual school site(s).

What is Junior Kindergarten?

Junior Kindergarten (JK), is a developmental kindergarten program designed for children who are kindergarten age, but not kindergarten “ready," as determined by the parents. The students considered for JK in the 2019-2020 school year were born between July 1 and Sept. 1, 2014. Following a year in JK, most students will enter Traditional Kindergarten. JK students engage in hands-on learning activities and are taught by credentialed teachers.

What is Transitional Kindergarten?

Transitional Kindergarten (TK) provides children who don’t meet the age requirement for regular kindergarten (per California law) to have an opportunity to build their readiness skills and abilities. The 2019-2020 TK program is open to children born between Sept. 2 and Dec. 2, 2014. TK programs bridge preschool and kindergarten, and provide young learners with opportunities to learn and grow in an environment that is tailored to meet their academic and social needs. TK is the first of a two year program. Upon completion of TK, students promote to Kindergarten.

How do we enroll in JK or TK?

Enrollment forms for JK/TK must be submitted to SVUSD District Office located at 101 West Cochran Street. You may use the online enrollment form located on this page, or complete one in person at the District Office. Please see the box to the left titled "Registration Requirements". You must bring the required documents in order to complete the enrollment process.

For more information on any of our kindergarten programs, contact your neighborhood school during the regular school year (even if you're applying for School of Choice), or call the Educational Services Department at the District office year-round at 805.306.4500, Ext. 4207.
